What
is a Guardian Ad Litem?
Guardian
ad Litem is the designation given to an attorney who has volunteered
services and who has been appointed by order of the Orange County Courts
to represent the best interest of a child who is alleged to be abused,
abandoned or neglected or the victim or witness of crime. The Guardian
ad Litem investigates the situation from the child’s point of
view, works to protect the child’s rights and tries to ensure
that decisions made about the child’s future are truly in the
best interest of that child.
There's a place for you!
Depending
upon your desire or expertise, you can represent children as a Guardian
ad Litem on a pro bono basis in:
1. Juvenile
dependency cases,
2. Domestic Relations cases, and
3. Criminal cases.
We
Try To Make It Easy For You!
1. We provide
yearly live trainings. For those firms that have large numbers of attorneys
serving as Guardians ad Litem, we are also available to come to your
office to provide in-house training.
2. Training
manuals with form pleadings and resource guides are available.
3. Trained
non-attorney volunteers, also known as Volunteer Advocates for Children,
are available upon request to work with you to safeguard the interests
of the child you represent. They can gather records, interview witnesses,
meet with the child, monitor that child's progress, locate needed services
and monitor the Court's orders.
4. The
Society has a reference library and advice/referral services through
our Guardian ad Litem Program attorney and support staff.
