Volunteering
at the Legal Aid Society
Legal Aid
is able to help many low-income residents; the working poor, children
and other disadvantaged groups in our community through a collaborative
effort of local lawyers and other non-attorney volunteers. We need and
welcome new volunteers, from all walks of life, all the time.
Non-attorney
volunteers contribute thousands of hours annually to our organization.
These volunteers are a mix of young students, retired seniors, business
persons, and stay at home parents.
Most intake
volunteers come one day a week for approximately three hours. We use
volunteers in our main office in downtown Orlando, and in our outreach
offices in Apopka, Winter Park, Winter Garden, East Orange, and Washington
Shores. The times available for volunteering vary. No prior legal experience
is necessary.
Primarily,
volunteers assist us in interviewing. We also have a need for volunteers
to file, type letters, send mail, etc. We offer an orientation/overview
meeting and training for all new volunteers. If you are interested,
please fill out the Non-Attorney
Volunteer Application and fax to the attention of L. Thatcher
at 407-843-9713. If you have questions, please email
lthatcher@legalaidocba.org or call 407-841-8310 ext. 3156.
Our Guardian
ad Litem Volunteer Advocates for Children assist our pro bono attorneys
and staff attorneys with cases involving abused and neglected children.
A full day’s training is offered. Background checks will be performed.
Duties may include interviewing parties, maintaining contact with the
child, obtaining records and conducting home visits. Non-attorneys
with a medical, psychology, education or social work background can
lend a particular expertise by helping to analyze records and assist
us in making recommendations for services. If you are interested,
please fill out the Guardian
ad Litem Volunteer Advocates for Children application
and fax to the attention of Advocates for Children at 407-843-9713.
